The global knowledge economy of the future will be driven by creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship. In addition, the challenges facing nations around the world will require new approaches. Colleges and universities, therefore, must foster creative approaches for their students and their institutions, yet there has been much less attention to creativity in colleges and universities compared with other sectors of society.

This subject is of special importance to Chinese universities. In April 2011, President Hu Jintao said, “Innovation becomes the main driving force of economic social development, and intellectual innovation becomes the core factor of national competitiveness.” Therefore this conference is much more than an academic discussion—it has the potential to influence the current policy debate in China.

The keynote speaker will be Dr. Gerard Puccio, Department Chair and Professor at the International Center for Studies in Creativity at Buffalo State University (USA), a unique academic department that offers the world’s only master’s degree in creativity. Invited speakers include academics and policy leaders from Europe, Australia, North America, and Asia. The goal is an international perspective on creativity and innovation in higher education.

We invite submissions around three broad themes:

  1. Student Creativity
  2. Curriculum Creativity
  3. Institutional Creativity

Presentations may include case studies of good practice as well as more theoretical or comparative explorations of the theme. Academic presentations will be presented in English, select sessions will include chinese interpretation and translation services.

Deadline for submission of abstracts is December 15, 2011. Applications and abstracts will be evaluated based on their originality, quality, and relevance to the themes of the conference. The organizing committee may group several presentations into panels of speakers where appropriate, based on the congruence of the proposed topics. Notice of acceptance will be sent by email no later than February 1, 2012.

Deadline for submission of full papers is April 15, 2012. Full papers must be received by this date to be included in the program and to receive complimentary registration, accommodations, and a travel stipend. The conference organizers intend to publish the best papers in a volume of conference proceedings.

To submit your abstract, please register as a speaker. If your abstract is selected and you are chosen to present your paper at the conference, you will receive a confirmation no later than February 1, 2012. Then you will be expected to submit your full paper no later than April 15, 2012 to Kathryn Mohrman at Should you have additional questions about applying to be a speaker at the 2012 HECC, please contact Kathryn Mohrman at 001 (602) 496-0463.

PLEASE NOTE: All individuals selected to make presentations will receive complimentary registration, deluxe double room accommodations in Chengdu for the nights of June 11-13 at the Kehuayuan Hotel, a day-long tour of Chengdu on June 14, and all meals and conference materials.
