Singapore’s Newest University: University of Technology and Design
Higher Education Institution
opening in 2012
Singapore’s newest university, Singapore University of Technology and Design, will be the fourth autonomous university in Singapore. The idea of this new university emerges from a partnership with Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Zhejiang University in China. The founding president is Thomas Magnanti, who is an Institute Professor at MIT. The university is expected to open its doors in temporary space in 2012 and on a new permanent campus in 2015. Singapore University of Technology and Design's mission is to advance knowledge and nurture technically grounded leaders and innovators and to serve societal needs. Furthermore, this new university will focus on engineering design through an integrated multi-disciplinary curriculum/research and will be the first and only university to be established in the eastern part of Singapore at Changi.
The orthodox idea of the creation of a new university, Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD), in a country such as Singapore that is committed to education and research, was made possible with the support of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). The founding president of SUTD, Thomas Magnanti, an Institute Professor and former Dean of Engineering at the MIT, hopes that SUTD will replicate for Singapore what MIT and Stanford have done for Massachusetts and Silicon Valley – to become an “intellectual hub and an engine of growth” for Singapore and the world. The creation of SUTD, Maganti believes, will provide a unique opportunity to design a contemporary and vibrant university for today and for tomorrow. SUTD, now under construction for temporary space opening at Dover in 2012, has also built a strong connection with a top Chinese research institution, Zhejiang University (ZU). ZU has pledged to design some courses, provide internship opportunities, and conduct joint research. Furthermore, since SUTD will be the first and only university to be permanently located in the eastern part of Singapore at Changi in 2015, Singapore is importing an ancient Chinese building, donated by the movie star Jackie Chan, to remind students of Eastern design traditions.
SUTD will focus on engineering design to advance knowledge and nurture technically savvy leaders and innovators and to serve societal needs by providing fast turn-around real-world application solutions. Technology and design offer enormous intellectual challenges and opportunities as well as an unparalleled occasion to impact and lead practice in Singapore and the world. Through creative research and education focusing on technology and design, SUTD aims to train technically-grounded leaders and entrepreneurs who are fully equipped to address present and future challenges and issues. Moreover, with SUTD being anchored in Singapore and Asia, the university will be well positioned to take advantage of the world’s fastest growing economies and hopes to become an important research, technology, and learning university. SUTD’s motto, The Art and Practice of Design, captures its full embodiment of mind (art) and hand (practice).
SUTD will provide a common curriculum for all students in the freshman year and first half of the sophomore year, providing a solid foundation in the fields of math, science, technology, and design. Students will then have the opportunity to specialize in one of four areas (also known as “pillars”) which are: Information Systems Technology & Design (ISTD), Architecture & Sustainable Design (ASD), Engineering Product Development (EPD), and Engineering Systems and Design (ESD). Also, a two-year Dual MIT-SUTD Masters’ Degree Program will be available for talented graduates with interest in research following into one of the areas: Civil and Environmental Engineering, Supply Chain Management, and Engineering in Manufacturing.
Not available at this time.
The interim campus for Singapore University of Technology and Design is at Dover, Singapore. SUTD's permanent campus will be located in Changi and is scheduled to open in 2015.
